- evelyn lacantere, 35, deceased

HOMETOWN: paris, france, and then phoenix, arizona
OVERALL: Chrissy was born in Paris, France, to Kail and Evelyn, who were - as the story goes - high school sweethearts and then college sweethearts. In fact, the couple married straight out of college and then decided they wanted children, and they had their daughter, Christine - who from the moment she could think for herself and talk wanted to be called Chrissy, and so she was. A year later they had Kaylie, who Chrissy loved instantly and the two little girls were best friends. It seems like that perfect story of the two perfect kids and the high school sweethearts that you hear all the time, I know, but it’s the farthest thing from that. You see, Kail wasn’t as nice as Evelyn had once believed him to be after his daughters were born. He worked late and was often tired and easily angered, and so if Chrissy or Kaylie tugged his shirt to get his attention and asked for something, he would hit them. He would say he didn’t mean to, but he did, and he never attempted to calm them down - he let his wife do that.
By the time Chrissy was three, she was smart enough to know that Mami was the only one she could ask for things. Papi would hurt her if she asked him, she knew that now. Kaylie hardly asked Kail for things, and so didn’t catch on as quickly, despite Chrissy’s efforts to make her baby sister wiser. Evelyn simply decided that Kail was cranky at night and just kept her daughters away from him as much as possible - she was too in love with her husband to see the signs of domestic abuse that were forming on the horizon. Then Kail and Evelyn fought when Chrissy was eight, and she pulled Kaylie in her room protectively and fell asleep on her bed with her, listening to the sounds of her parents screaming and her mother crying and things smashing. When the girls woke up, Kail was gone and Evelyn had bandaged herself everywhere. As scared as Chrissy was, she didn’t ask her mother what had happened, she didn’t ask where her father was, she simply sat down next to her on the couch with Kaylie and hugged her. Chrissy was a smart child, and she knew better than to ask questions that would make her mother upset. So she just didn’t.
When she was twelve, her mother went to the emergency room with a broken wrist after a fight with her father, taking the girls and three suitcases with her. Evelyn had packed her own belongings and Chrissy and Kaylie’s belonging, and stuffed her wallet with as much money as she could manage and brought her purse and car along. Once the hospital allowed her to leave, she bought three plane tickets to America and none of the girls ever looked back. They moved to Arizona, and Chrissy and Kaylie kept to themselves in school, slowly learning English and conversing to each other in rapid French. Chrissy read a lot to help her with her English and made no friends; she was far too shy and quiet and weird to be approached or to approach anyone on her own. And she was scared of people, because of her father’s abuse. She stuttered when she spoke to children or adults, even though eventually her English was excellent, though her accent has yet to fade. She bit her lip and avoided eye contact, she never answered questions in class even when she knew the answer, and she was often made fun of by her classmates. Still, she had Kaylie, and her baby sister and her mother were the only people she needed.
When she turned fifteen, nothing changed. Nothing changed except for the fact that Pheonix, Arizona quickly became a battlefield for the angels and demons, even though she didn’t know what was going on at all. Her mother was killed and Chrissy began to regret leaving France, even though her abusive father was there. At least she would have been safer there, or she hoped as much. The demons took her and Kaylie without much of a struggle from either of them, although the shouted and pleaded in French. They had lost their mother, they couldn’t lose each other, but it seemed like that was the intention of the demons. But a female demon saw them bring Chrissy and Kaylie in and stopped them, because of the fear written all over Chrissy’s face, and demanded that they hand her over. Confused, afraid, and wishing for her sister, Chrissy was shoved away, crying out in French again for Kaylie to no avail. The demons turned a corner and Kaylie disappeared. Still, Chrissy knows that it’s because of her demon owner that she’s alive and safe and protected, and she’s grateful for that. All she wants now is to survive the war, get Kaylie back, and go back to France. Maybe learning to stand up for herself will happen too, but that’s very unlikely. All of it is.
