i'm afraid this complacency is
SOMETHING I CAN'T SHAKE. I GOTTA GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE.
AND I'M BEGGING YOU TO BE MY ESCAPE.
The tunnels of the underground were how every untouchable and hunter got around. They could sneak into enemy territory without being detected because of how deep and vast the tunnels were. They were a long, complex system of hundreds of different tunnels that never seemed to end. How long had they been here? Probably centuries. Some tunnels were huge, with high ceilings and wide floors, while in others, one would have to crawl. It seemed as if the tunnels were built to purposely confuse someone who didn’t know where they were going. One tunnel could fork into a dozen more, and some of those would lead to another dozen more, while others would turn into a dead end. A person would walk around for days, with no food or water, wondering where the hell they were. It was almost like an underground desert, but darker and cooler. In fact, it was almost too cool. Despite the fact that they were buried beneath the blazing Arizona sun, it was a ridiculously chilly temperature. It was very possible that many people had died in their tunnels. It was possible that their bodies either decayed into the ground or had all been collected and dropped into a tunnel much harder to find. It was hard to determine where you were going in the pitch darkness. Only a few researchers, analysts, hunters, and untouchables actually knew how to move around the tunnels without a map or flashlight. It was virtually impossible to find your way out. No one could ever expect a mere kid to escape. No one could ever expect a mere kid and her dog to escape.
Dakota had spent weeks mapping out her escape route. In fact, she had snuck into the offices of the headquarters multiple times just to get her hands on a map. She had caused distractions, attacked staff members, destroyed a lab, disrupted a training session, hit on a few guards, and picked on the other untouchables. Why? To ensure that every person in this place either hated her, was irritated by her, or strongly disliked everything about her. She had people supervising her at just about every waking moment, and most of her moments asleep, too. Cameras had been installed into her bunker and Max, her best friend, had to be locked in a cage in a separate room each night. Max was a wolf hybrid, and Dakota had gotten him when she started high school, before the war. He had been her best friend since. He was protective, loyal, and never left her side. And in return, Dakota was the same way. Another thing Dakota had done was break into the kennel that they stuffed Max into and let him out every night. It wasn’t until they caught her on tape that they realized Dakota was doing it. For some reason, they could never comprehend the fact that she was a lot smarter and mischievous than the average seventeen-year-old girl. They knew she was tough and they knew she would fight if they ever tried to contain her, but they never suspected that she actually knew what she was doing. She had only managed to escape after conning the guards into thinking that she had to privately go to the bathroom and take care of feminine things. She demanded they get her the necessities in order to take care of her problem. While they were off searching, she was sneaking through a few air vents with Max.
Most recently, she had mapped out the tunnels from her bunker to her escape hatch. She still had no idea where the hatch was on the outside world, and honestly, the maps were no help. They were in a strange code, specifically designed to confuse anyone who stole them and tried to escape. Someone like Kotta. She was being held here against her will. All she wanted to do was get the hell out of Arizona and run for the forests up North until the war ended. Yeah, she wanted to fight, but she wanted to find her brother first. She was convinced that he wasn’t dead. He was just missing. Her parents and sister, she knew for a fact they were goners. But her brother had to be out there. He just had to be. Kotta’s had marked her route along the stolen maps. If everything went well, she would probably be walking for about a day or so until she found where she was going. With any luck at all, she’d find an unmarked short cut along the way. She had already packed a backpack with food and water for her and Max, and extra set of clothes, a pocketknife, the maps, and any other tools she may or may not need along the way.
Now, Kotta was in the tunnels. Max was at her side. She would talk to him occasionally and he would just whine or growl in response to what she said. She apologized a few times, like he could actually understand her. They were walking in pure silence – the only sound was their footsteps or the occasionally echo of water running from the lake, which was buried somewhere in the tunnels as well. Dakota had no idea what time it was. They had taken her cell phone from her on her first day here, and she never bothered to go get it. She had no idea how long they had been walking. She would have guessed a few hours, but it was hard to tell how far they had gone, how fast they were going, and where they were going. Their only source of light was a small flashlight that she had managed to steal; otherwise, it was pitch darkness – impossible to see. They practically walked blindly. Anytime the map said they would remain in one tunnel for a long time, she would turn off the flashlight to save battery. But after a few minutes, she would get paranoid and turn it back on. Sometimes, she would hear footsteps behind them, and even though she would jump wildly and Max would just stare at her, she still thought she heard someone. However, Max would know before her, and she was just being a paranoid baby. Silently, she told herself to stop being silly. Max would let her know if someone was near them. They would be fine.
